In conjunction with the Saint Andrews-Loches Alliance, students from Waid Academy, Anstruther and students from the University of St. Andrews will present an outline of their time spent in France, partly funded by the FSS and Loches-Alliance. Friends, families and carers are most welcome to attend.  Louise Glen OBE, formerly of Education Scotland, will speak about French language education in Scotland.

Topic: Seeing Double?  Nineteenth Century  Franco-Scottish Knowledge Making.

Professor Mary Orr, Buchanan Chair of French, Founding Director of the centre of Cross Cultural 19th Century Studies, University of St. Andrews

This talk reconsiders  the many cliches and tropes of Scotland in French Romantic writing by taking a tour of her differently comparative nineteenth century ‘Franco-Scottish’ research in the last 15 years. By opening the multiple backstories behind major Francophone interest  from the 1830s in Scotland’s  scenery, landscapes and ‘natural capital’ ( in today’s terms), the talk will invite fresh appraisal of Scotland as a key destination for nineteenth century international sciences. When Anglophone and Francophone history of science claims they can only be the realm of men , the fascinating parallel worlds ‘Scottish’ exploration, knowledge making and interculture exchange discover important women also doing  purposeful scientific work and travel within them. Talk in French with questions in French and English.

Professor Helen Drake, University of Loughborough and University of London will be our visiting speaker in 2027 attending all the FSS branches in Scotland.

Room 201 is on the first floor of the St Andrews University Student’s Union above the Rector’s Cafe on Market Street. Some paid parking is available next door to venue.
